I didn't "get" Spangel until season 5 of Angel, when they behaved like a bickering married couple. Then that remark, and the notion that William the Bloody and Angelus were up for anything back in the day...and yeah. It seems all too likely!

Actually, my thought when I first saw the two of them oncreen together, back in Sunnydale, was "Look at you two, quarreling like an old married couple."

Turns out they were. Don't know what that says about Sirius and Lupin.

I'm sure J.K. Rowling will someday admit to their brief love affair from their wild school days. ;)

As for Spike and Angel and their early onscreen interactions, I thought one of the darkest funny moments (or funniest dark moments) was in the season 2 finale, when Spike leaps out of his wheelchair and starts whaling on Angelus with a metal bar. He just obviously takes such pleasure in it...
