I mean, if you pair the scene with they meet with Joss's commentary about them, I just cannot accept that they weren't totally going at it as much as all of the other pairings in the awesome fucked up vampire foursome of history. I mean, I don't take creators' commentary as canon, per se, but it only backs up what I has already assumed was going on so....I'll take it!

I didn't "get" Spangel until season 5 of Angel, when they behaved like a bickering married couple. Then that remark, and the notion that William the Bloody and Angelus were up for anything back in the day...and yeah. It seems all too likely!

Not terribly new...I seem to remember learning about it when the X-Files was still on the air. "Ship" is short for "relationship," so shippers are those who believe in a semi-serious relationship between two characters.

As for Spike and Angel and their early onscreen interactions, I thought one of the darkest funny moments (or funniest dark moments) was in the season 2 finale, when Spike leaps out of his wheelchair and starts whaling on Angelus with a metal bar. He just obviously takes such pleasure in it...
