Interests update

mollyringleThis is mostly for my own records, because how many times have I heard that my LJ is just for me? (What a crock. But anyway.)
Have revamped my interests list. Deleted some that seemed bland or redundant or outdated, and added new ones. The new ones are, in alphabetical order (the librarian in me really loves that LJ alphabetizes them):
caverns, which are apparently not exactly the same thing as
caves. I don't know the technical difference, but I think I really like both of them. Have never been particularly claustrophobic.
choral music. I get goosebumps at musical moments like the last 60 seconds of "The Bridge of Khazad-Dum" on the FOTR soundtrack. I stand in awe of humans who can sound like angels. [This statement has not been tested by anyone who has actually heard angels.]
cinerama. But I like Britpop too.
comets. Certain astronomical happenings can lure me outside on a cold night very fast. Comets are especially rad. My Outdoor School name was in fact "Comet" when I was 10.
elbow. The band; not the body part.
folklore. I had "mythology," so thought I should round it out. Have to include fairies and selkies and things.
ghost stories. Just an oversight that this wasn't already on the list...
gilmore girls. The show is still not great, but I watch it anyway. Has its moments.
herbs. Rosemary, marjoram, oregano...what's not to like?
hildegard von bingen. Female composer from Germany, 900 years ago. An abbess. Heard some choral music composed by her on classical radio the other day and was transfixed. Simple, but unearthly-sacred. Like standing in Westminster Abbey and looking up, up, up those Gothic arches and feeling steeped in history. Felt almost like hearing actual voices of medieval nuns through some magic time portal. Either I'm gettin' religion after all, or I was just really bored that day.
lime. I already had "lemon," but really they're both good.
meteors. Almost as cool as comets. Better, sometimes.
mst3k. Fits my sense of humor so well. Why wasn't it on the list already?
musicals. Replacing "show tunes." Seemed more accurate.
northern lights. Which I've never seen, and which were apparently visible in Seattle last night, and NO ONE TOLD ME, and tonight it's cloudy, and ugh.
spices. Cardamom, cumin, clove...what's not to like?
the delays. Pretty pretty music.
young adult fiction. What I think might be my true calling. Lots of people have suggested it, based on my style and my usually-tending-toward-young protagonists. Best part, though? You can mix up whatever genres you want, and as long as you have teenagers in the focus, you get to call it "young adult." So much handier than the usual quandary I end up in: "Um, well, it's kind of a paranormal/romantic/mythological/surreal/mainstream/women's-lit story. With some recipes."
Now, if only there were space for the interest "writing LJ instead of getting other stuff done".
P.S. This band Gregorian, who does popular songs in the style of monks singing plainchant? Actually kind of cool. Or silly and dorky. I can't decide.

Date: 2004-11-09 08:53 pm (UTC)Musicals: my current favorite is the new 'Jane Eyre.' I loved the book, and they're faithful to it, and the songs are beautiful and moving. Musicals are a visceral thing for me, though. The ones I love, I love deeply and sometimes for reasons I can't explain. The ones I hate: ditto. :) I seldom get out and see them onstage anymore, but via high schools and community theatres and the occasional professional troupe, I've seen a couple dozen. When you count films, a couple dozen more. Either medium can be good. I loved Moulin Rouge to pieces, and I doubt it would work quite as well on stage (or without Ewan McGregor...I'm biased there...). Definitely looking forward to the film version of Phantom of the Opera.
I have been in the pit orchestra for Brigadoon (which I more or less like), the light booth for Oliver (which I more or less dislike), and the chorus for Tommy (which I liked way better than I expected to).
Comets: heh, my dad and I went out trying to see Halley's comet in '86 several chilly nights, but never succeeded. It was way too faint that year. I'm hoping to live long enough for its next go-round, but there have been some great ones in the interim. Comets Hyukutake and Hale-Bopp, in '96 and '97 if I remember right, were awesome. And, yeah, seen Meteor Crater. Wow. :) Technically, though, I think it should be called Meteorite Crater, since if it makes it all the way to the Earth without burning up, it gets the "-ite" attached.
YA slash: hahah! Yeah, I think the trick with YA books is to keep them technically slash-free, and low-key on the sex in general; but to recognize that this will not stop your fans from writing lots of sex and slash about your characters for you. I, as an author, will welcome it. ;)

If your email server can take a good-size file without blowing up (mine won't) I'll send you an mp3 of Betelehemu (their best song, IMO) so you can see if you want to order a CD.
Jane Eyre is a musical? WOW! Like you, I love the book. Is it on film yet, or still a stage production? I agree re Ewan McGregor; N. Kidman said she fell in love with him every time he opened his mouth to sing. The "Like A Virgin" number in MR, though, makes me want to hide under a (soundproof) blanket for a year or so. Love the Argentine tango/Roxanne bit, though. (I also love the Argentine tango numbers in Evita; do we see a trend here?) Re Phantom: Who's starring? I have a hard time imagining anyone but Sarah Brightman singing Christine. And Tommy kicks ass. Are you a soprano, an alto, or something in between? I'm so close to tenor I might as well be a boy.
I love being in musicals. I'm a stage slut; I'd rather be in front of an audience than eat. Unfortunately, health problems have put an end to that. Probably my most amusing turn was as a Shark's girl in West Side Story; given that my ancestry is largely German with hints of Brit and Scot, you can probably imagine how poorly I matched the expected appearance of that role. Thank goodness for heavy makeup and wigs. (My own boyfriend walked by me w/o recognizing me.)
Re Halley's: I remember standing in a parking lot with strong binoculars, trying to decide if that vague blurry spot just to one side of the Pleiades was the comet or a blot on the lens. Hale-Bopp *was* amazing, though.
Re YA slash: Years from now, I expect there to be a web page devoted to slashing your terribly famous, oh-so-innocent characters. And you can write your own slashy parodies, under an assumed name, to make those of us who knew you when laugh our butts off.

Looks to be mostly unknowns in the cast. No Brightman or Crawford. (Btw, did you know Michael Crawford was in the film version of A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, as the cute young hapless Hero? Quite a distance from the formidable Phantom. Hee.)
Oooh, the "Tango de Roxanne" leaves me breathless, especially Ewan breaking in with, "It's more than I can staaaand!" :) And the operatic ending of the song too. But, yeah. I fast-forward "Like A Virgin."
I'm an alto, and if I were a better singer I'd be really annoyed at how few alto or lower parts are written for women. Do we all have to be freakin' sopranos if we want the big roles?
Hah...yeah, I think I will have to write my own slash and parodies, under a code name. An underhanded publicity technique, we could call it.
