There is a trailer out for Lemony Snicket's 'A Series of Unfortunate Events', which looks delightful. The orphans are cute but not preciously so. Set pieces look like Tim Burton has been there - or maybe I thought of it because they were using the Edward Scissorhands soundtrack for the preview. (This makes Lemony approximately the 85th movie to use the Scissorhands soundtrack in its preview. That's just how good a soundtrack it is. Everyone wants to be that soundtrack.)

While browsing upcoming movies and their previews, I also discovered another Christmas release: Andrew Lloyd Webber's 'The Phantom of the Opera'. Yep, the musical. I had no idea. Could be fun. I always liked that one, despite it being set in, you know, France.

Oh, and we saw Kill Bill: Vol. 2 the other night. Quite different than the first volume, but I liked it much better. Less fighting, more drama, fascinating interaction, and your usual fun Tarantino quirkiness. (If I ever have to choose a monologue to perform in the future, maybe I'll be Elle Driver explaining what she learned on the internet about the venom of the black mamba.)

Yeah, I have work to do, though. What a freakin' couple weeks it's been. Ciao.

Samantha and I saw Vol. 2 when it was in theaters. It was packed, and everyone simultaneously gasped, groaned, or screamed when the Bride ah... ended the fight with Elle.

Ooh, yeah, that was memorable. Hehe. Come to think of it, Elle fought very well considering she shouldn't have had any depth perception. Probably shouldn't have been driving, either...

Coincidentally, when we went to see Sky Captain last week, I had commented on the use of the Edward Scissorhands music for the Lemony Snicket movie. For some reason it bothers me that they would use the same music score for more than one movie.
It's kind of like using the Simpson's music for a reality tv show.
It just makes you stop and go, "huh?"

Indeed. It's a great soundtrack, to be sure, but it seems like you shouldn't lift one film's theme and put it on another film. Just doesn't feel right.

And thank you for saying "Coincidentally" rather than "ironically." It bugs me when people say "ironically" when they really meant "coincidentally." :)

I'm not sure how I feel about the Unfortunate Events film since the kid playing Klaus has a look about him that is irksome (Violet and Sunny are fab, though). Also, I am hoping that Jim Carrey doesn't spend the whole film pandering his type of physical humor to the camera. True, Olaf is manic in numerous ways, but I just hope Carrey can control his face a bit. The fact that the script went through four re-writes and two directors also makes me a bit suspicious (they fired the author of the novels whose name escapes me now). I'll go an see it I suppose, nonetheless.

Yeah, I couldn't stand The Mask for the Carrey factor; but then I've really liked him in other things, so I'm trying to give this the benefit of the doubt. The difficulty of putting six or seven books into one film does seem worrisome, though.

Daniel Handler didn't get the final word, eh? Hm. Also perhaps not a good sign. Maybe I'll go buy Magnetic Fields tickets to show my support for him. :) (They're coming to Seattle in November. Could be fun.)

Started with Edward Scissorhands then moved delightfully into Adam's Family. Both good soundtracks. But yes, people use Edward Scissorhands soundtrack clips all the time. Danny Elfman is teh shizzo, yo. *wonders if she's used the slang properly* I never was much good at slang...

Aye, Elfman doth rock; and 'Edward Scissorhands' is my absolute favorite score of his. Heh; around here virtually no one uses the -izz- infix, so I'm not quite sure how it goes. I think it's more a Florida/south thang, or just is used in a demographic I'm not part of. :)

I've seen the stage show of 'Phantom' it was better than I expected it to be.
I read an amusing comment about Ben Stiller the other day "Ben Stiller has a moustache. That's it. That is the whole comedy basis of the film."

Got to love a show where they drop a chandelier onto the actors. I listened to the double-CD of 'Phantom' in high school so many times that it's burned permanently into my memory - and that was even before I saw the show (which was indeed cool).

Heh. Good line. I can't decide if I like Ben Stiller or not. I'm pretty neutral on him. Owen Wilson, though, who's often attached to Ben these days, does amuse me.
