A small LOTR-obsessed entry is long past due, don't you think?

Okay, so I spotted an interesting touchy-feely moment in the film, between Legolas and Aragorn. They're on the banks of the Great River (toward the end of the movie) and Legolas has just said his shadow-and-a-threat line, followed with "Something draws near. I can feel it." Aragorn looks appropriately concerned. We cut to Merry noticing that Frodo's gone. We go back to the other two, and find that Aragorn is suddenly a few inches from Legolas's face, and has his hand on Legolas's shoulder. He reluctantly lets it drop and looks around for Frodo.

But, really, think about that: Ass-kicking elf guy says he thinks there's danger near. So ass-kicking future-king guy responds by...sidling up close and caressing his shoulder? Interesting choice, there, Estel. Somehow I can't see most men going that route. We understand, of course--your buddy is indeed a very "comely elf." (I love that DVD-extra moment...Viggo murmuring, "He's a comely elf, isn't he?" and Orlando smiling sarcastically in return.)

But then, I can't see most men saying, "A shadow and a threat have been growing in my mind," either. (Time for a Secret Diaries quote: Aragorn: "Legolas told me today that a shadow and a threat had been growing in his mind. I think Legolas might be kinda gay.") So maybe the elves have different customs--and we must recall that Aragorn did grow up among elves.

Or maybe he considers Legolas his rabbit's foot, something to fondle when you need good luck. Yeah, okay, I crack myself up.

Incidentally, it really seems like there ought to be some good risque comeback line, in answer to what Legolas says. I just can't come up with one.
("Well, YOU've been growing in MY mind, baby." No, that sucks, but you get the idea...)
