Thank you, one and all, for your thoughtful answers last night. And especially for the St. Patrick's Day kisses. (Cyberkisses are the most hygienic sort.) I don't have the stamina to go into any more politics today, so I'm not answering any of the responses, but I just wanted to say "thanks" since everyone was so civilized.

Back to our usual programming here, which is Pop Culture and Pretty Boys:

- If you still want to vote on your favorite albums, go ahead. I've got a long list of responses already, but will welcome more. Then maybe at the end of the week I'll announce results.

- Apparently Tobey Maguire, due to some back pain, might opt out of being Spider-man again in the sequel. If this happens, Jake Gyllenhaal is supposed to take his place. This would actually work: not only is it convenient, since Jake is dating Kirsten ("MJ") Dunst, but he looks like Tobey. Has that same sweet-geeky-cute thing going on. In fact, Tobey, Jake, and Elijah together form the very dangerous Axis of Angst (full name: Axis of Adorably Geeky Blue-Eyed Angst), and are therefore more or less interchangeable. Well, no...Elijah's too short to be Spidey, and the other two are too tall to be Frodo. But still. You see my point.

- [livejournal.com profile] lush_rimbaud has recently pointed out the hobbity quality of the Beatles (or is it the Beatleish quality of the hobbits?), which has got me thinking what fun a 'Hard Day's Night'/'LotR' crossover could be. Here was the example I gave her:

Pippin: Who's the li'tl old man?
Frodo: That's me uncle.
Merry: That's not your uncle.
Frodo: But it is, you know.
Merry: But I've seen your uncle; he lives in your house.

Would the girls chasing them at the beginning be Ringwraiths? Would someone ask the lads what they called that curly moptop hairdo of theirs, and would they answer "Arthur"? Most importantly, which hobbit is which Beatle? I think Frodo would clearly be Paul (being The Cute One and all), and for some reason Pippin is screaming out to be Ringo; but who's Sam: Lennon or Harrison? Personality-wise, I'd say Harrison...but, in attachment to Frodo/Paul, Lennon would make more sense...hmmm. (So is Rosie Yoko Ono? Haha...)

Anyways. I'm just avoiding finals-week duties; don't mind me.

Poor Tobey. I hope he feels better. Still, no skin off of my nose if there is an old switcharoo, considering that Jake can actually *ahem* act. (Nevermind the fact that I also have a small crush on Jake.)

Jake is indeed a fine actor...and just plain fine, as well. ;)

Hobbit Beatles, you say? ;)

Ahahaha... that's awesome!

(Hey, that's what my icon kinda looks like. I knew it reminded me of something.)

Thanks! One of these days, when I have the time and skill, I want to try the cover to Abbey Road, in hobbit fashion. It's so iconic...it must be done.

This warrants much more thought! Can the Blue Meanies be the Orcs? Can Glovey be the Balrog? Agree that Sam sort of has to be John, which doesn't /quite/ work. But Gandalf is definitely George Martin. And I suppose Jeremy the Boob is Gollum -- actually, when you think about the plot of YS, Jeremy really sort of /is/ Gollum...

Lemon: I will say that, upon close inspection, images of Stewart Copeland (drummer - The Police) circa 1983-85 have a geeky-pretty-boy element about them... but I digress.

Someone needs to help Jake Gyllenhaal take direction of his career... His upcoming film has a bitter pill of a plot to swallow (The Day After Tomorrow), so maybe a big-budget action flick would help him get better representation. However, check out Moonlight Mile. Nothing new here, but Jake plays "the wounded boyfriend" superbly.

Didn't even recognize Sean Astin in that icon at first. Hee...cute.

I'll have to check out Moonlight Mile. So far I've seen Jake in October Sky (which was good, but didn't get much press), The Good Girl and Donnie Darko (in which he did a good job, but the movies were ultimately sort of strange), and some horrid boring indie thing called Lovely and Amazing in which he was the only bright spot.

*squeeeeeeeeeee* I love "A Hard Day's Night" I am tempted to say that Sam is Lennon. He is close to Frodo as Paul and Lennon are close. I think that yes, Pippin is Ringo, Frodo is Paul, and Merry is George.

Thanks for posting this. Ironically enough I was watching "A Hard Day's Night" last evening.

Love it, hobbits as beatles! I have to say: I read on an online interview with Sean Astin where he said that Peter Jackson got him to think of the hobbits as the Beatles. Sean watched Hard Day's Night and PJ said that if the hobbits were Beatles Sam would be Ringo. Awww...
Also, my friend insists that the Golden Slumbers Medley from Abbey Road is based on LOTR. There's "Sun King" which is the scene at the end where they come to the Cormallen Fields. Noble but sad-sounding. Then "Carry that weight" and "Golden slumbers" are Sam comforting Frodo in Gorgoroth and then later during his nightmares. This according to my dear friend Willow. She made it sound plausible...but then she is even more of a mad fan than I am, and by now she is seeing LOTR everywhere including the bus schedule:-)

Wow! Cool. That makes some sense, really. I think I'll have to bring this point forward as a new journal post. Thank you!

I'd actually have to go with Sam as Ringo, as he seems to be the most understated one. And Merry would be George because, like George, he doesn't really do much in the movie. This leaves the problem of assigning John and Paul, and I don't think either remaining hobbit has the wit of John, nor does either remaining Beatle have the idiocy of Pippin (not that I have anything against Pippin, he's just rather obnoxiously stupid for a while).

here's my beatles/hobbits opinions:

no contest...frodo is paul, the cute one. i'd go with sam as george 'the quiet hobbit' and merry as john, the brash one. and pippin is ringo, the funny one.
