That's right; I want you to tell me what your favorite albums are.

I took a survey like this 5 years ago, on a Cure mailing list (was anyone else here on Babble?), and ended up with quite the list of albums from a few dozen Cure fans. But the times have changed, and I want a new vote from new people.

I won't give you a quota or a limit. Tell me your favorites, whether it's just two albums or twenty. Any genre. And you can organize them into two categories, if you wish: Recent Favorites, and All-Time Favorites. (Because I know they're not always the same thing.) In a week or two I'll give a final tally of the votes.

Here are mine for the day...

Recent Favorites (i.e., have played them a lot lately and really enjoy them)
Doves - "The Last Broadcast"
Stone Roses - "The Complete Stone Roses"
film soundtrack - "Hedwig & the Angry Inch"
Also an Enya mix CD and a David Bowie mix CD, which probably don't count.

All-Time Favorites (i.e., CD's so good that I don't dare listen to them too much, for fear I'll ruin it)
Pulp - "Different Class"
Dead Can Dance - "Within the Realm of a Dying Sun"
Michael Nesmith & The First National Band - "Complete"
The Divine Comedy - "Casanova"
This Mortal Coil - "Blood"
The Cure - "The Head on the Door" (felt like I should choose a Cure album...which one, will depend on the mood)
The Who - "Tommy"

Well that's a tough one but I would have to say:

Recent Favorites:
Flogging Molly - Drunken Lullabies

My all-time favorites would have to be a mix CD of a bunch of different songs so mine wouldn't count.

Can't wait to see the results!

Natalie Merchant - Live In New York is a perpetual favorite of mine. I got two years ago, used, for $8, and it's nearly the best investment I've made. I like a lot of music, but it's rare for me to able to enjoy a whole album straight through, repeatedly.

Oooh, it's quite a hard thing to do, actually.

Let's see, you can probably put down everything The Divine Comedy have done, but if you want a choice, let's say A Short Album About Love, Liberation and Promenade.
David Bowie: Heathen; ...hours; I have a best of but that doesn't really count, although I listen to it lots. Must get Ziggy, really.
Seal: Seal
Del Amitri: Twisted; Lousy With Love; Can You Do Me Good?
I love my Sting best of, though I've never got round to buying his albums.

There's more, but that's enough for now.

these are just some....

*Note: After much debate, I determined that a “favorite album” is one that you can listen to all the way through. For example, I love Ted Leo…however, he is sporadically brilliant. Creating an all-encompassing “great” album has not been his forte. I did not include soundtracks or greatest hits collections here for the sake of “clarity” if you will. That said, here are my lists in no particular order:

Old Standbys
The Cure - Disintegration
The Smiths - Strangeways Here We Come
XTC - The Black Sea
The Judybats - Down in the Shacks Where The Satellite Dishes Grow
Morrissey - Vauxhall and I

Recent Favorites
(Narrowed Down to Those I Think Will Eventually Turn Into Old Standbys)
The Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots
Death Cab for Cutie - We Have The Facts and We’re Voting Yes
Dashboard Confessional - The Places You Have Come to Fear The Most

Albums I Am Almost Embarrassed to Admit I Love
Depeche Mode - Violator
Duran Duran - Self-Titled First Album

Hi furies! Thanks for the list.

Yeah, I figured if there were too many tracks I habitually skip, then I couldn't count it as a favorite, regardless of the rest of the CD.

I could well add "Yoshimi.." to my list too. Just recently got it, and it's quite pleasant...

If you like Yoshimi, I would also check out Soft Bulletin and Clouds Taste Metallic as well. Being the LOTR fan that you are, I'm sure you already know that Elijah Wood lists Soft Bulletin as one of his favorite albums.

Kevon and I have liked The Flaming Lips for a few years now... I'm always eager to sing their praises.

Yeah, I bookmarked a page of Elijah's favorite albums...it's provided some good suggestions so far. :) (Though he lists some stuff I know I wouldn't like.) I'll have to try those other Flaming Lips albums. Yoshimi is quite growing on me.

I agree with ten_fifteen, a favorite album is one you can listen to nonstop. I also don't count compilations/greatest hits/mixes. I already posted these over at the blogspot, but there's more action here, so I'll stick them here as well.

Recent Favorites:
Disturbed - "Believe", "The Sickness"
Puddle of Mudd - "Come Clean"
Our Lady Peace - "Gravity"
All-Time Favorites:
Aerosmith - "Toys In The Attic"

The Who - "Who's Next", "Tommy"
Aerosmith - "Get A Grip"

Led Zeppelin - "Untitled (Led Zeppelin IV)(ZOSO)"
Sublime - "40oz to Freedom"

After looking through, I have this one to add.
Nirvana - "Nevermind"
