The French. And the Stone Roses. Well, that's an odd mix and no mistake.

I love this song. Why did no one tell me how cool the Stone Roses were? Or rather, why didn't I listen until reading it on Elijah Wood's list of his top three zillion favorite albums, and why did I only then go find some mp3's?...heh... Yeah. That's just sad, I know.

Anyway - here's an amusing little picture for those of you who know and love the phrase "cheese-eating surrender monkeys":

See, Elijah and I have like 2% of our musical tastes in common, so I've not tried the Stone Roses, and yet here you are saying you like them, and you like the Monkees and you know the words to "The Greatest American Hero" theme song, so fine. Any suggestions for a couple of SR downloads?

I'm brand-new at Stone Roses - I have all of four songs at my disposal at the moment - and I'll know more in a couple weeks when the CD I ordered arrives. But so far, this one ("Elephant Stone") is the nicest and catchiest. I haven't cared as much for their grunge-style ones (indeed, I do not care for grunge in general), but they seem to have several other pleasant ones. Seems like "Sally Cinnamon" is also good, and "Sugar Spun Sister," and maybe "Where Angels Play," and um, now I'm just basing it on the 30-second music samples at the BMG page.

Anyway, my tastes are eccentric, so you never know. I have a few of the albums Elijah listed (in the gray box on the side, anyway, not his featured choices), but Smashing Pumpkins bore me, and I don't think there's *any* hip-hop I like, and I'll keep my opinons about jazz to myself so as not to offend all the new fans that "Chicago" spawned. :)

Thanks to your suggestions, I've managed to get about half the album so far. I got all excited when I realised I'd heard "She's My Sister" before. I'm liking "Bye Bye Badman" and "Fool's Gold" too.

i think rubber soul is my favorite...the american version...lp! or roundabout that mid sixties era. i play norwegian wood over and over because it's too short. love the guitar in that.

I thought I was the only one out there who didn't like The Smashing Pumpkins. (I can't stand Corgan's voice.) And if you looking for good Stone Roses' songs to download may I suggest, "I wanna be adored" and "Fool's Gold".




And if you love "I wanna be adored" and looking for like sounds, try Interpol, Joy Division, Elbow and Echo & The Bunnymen.




And looking over the list, Elijah doesn't have a half bad concept in music.

I LOVE the Stone Roses - pretty obscure there, Molly. (I like Aimee Mann too). I got the Stone Roses first tape way back in like the late '80's... (their first tape/cd rules) - for another unknown great band, get the first album by The Woodentops - trust me, it's awesome

Ok, without further ado, I submit ... today's gratuitous rant on the French...

Hey, we're all good capitalists here at nikita demosthenes world headquarters. We have no problem with the French making a franc or two - or a few billion - off of Saddam Hussein's oil fields. But - sheez - don't expect us to leave our population vulnerable to a suitcase full of chemical and/or biological cocktails mixed up by Saddam, just because Saddam bought off the French!

Sorry, Jacques Chirac - you guys will have to earn an honest buck, I'm afraid. You might try working more than - say - 35 hours a week. Then you wouldn't have to sell your soul to a murderous dictator just to balance next year's socialist, make-work, budget. Just a thought.

We'll protect our people - and democracy and freedom for future generations - as we have repeatedly done over the past century. You French can go do whatever it is you do. What is that exactly? Oh yeah - sell out. Go sell out. We can handle it - shucks, we EXPECT it. First Vichy France and now, what - Saddamy France? Whatever. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Don't forget the eight weeks a year of paid vacation they all enjoy. That might have to be pared down a bit... :)

Anyway, yes indeed, if it were just about oil, wouldn't we just lift sanctions and start getting oil again, instead of running the risk that Saddam would set all his oilfields on fire in the event of war? He's been known to do it.

By the way, congratulations on getting mentioned in the Atlantic Monthly! That's awesome.
