Does anyone else experience phantom phone buzz?

I tend to leave my cell phone on vibrate, so as to avoid having a call wake up a sleeping toddler, or chirp loudly in the public library. But that means I've become susceptible to thinking the phone is vibrating when it actually isn't. The car rumbles over a rough patch of pavement, someone scoots a piece of furniture, two pieces of fabric rub against each other--each time, I snap to attention and check the phone, thinking maybe someone called. Ugh. Nope, generally not.

Phantom phone buzz, I tell you. It's a real thing.

i've heard of that recently. someone on my friend list (whether journal or community, can't recall) mentioned it.

Happens to me all the time, with the added bonus of an occasional phantom tingling in my left hip, as if the phone were buzzing in my pocket.

I think I've had an ordinary stomach growl fool me into it too.

Yeah, happens to me. Mostly I get the tingling in my hip, as the user above mentioned. Sometime when the phone's not even in my pocket.

Yep--and as I said in response there too, regular old stomach growls have even momentarily fooled me into thinking it's the phone. Even if I don't have the phone with me.

Hmm, wasn't there a study on that...? *looks up*

There totally is! Proof that there is a study for everything... And if you don't feel like reading the article, someone wrote an article about it. XD

... sometimes, I think there needs to be a Science Rule 34.

Heh! OK, I'm not sure it warrants scientific research funds. :D But at least it's not just me.

Funny about Rule 34. I wasn't aware of it until someone cited it recently, and now I seem to see it everywhere. Another of those little phenomena. No research funds required; I know it happens all the time.

I've experienced this, too. I first learned that it wasn't just me by listening to an episode of "Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me" -- about 2 minutes into this recording.

Hah! Cool. I love "Wait Wait..." Should've known they'd find such a story. :D

*Many* times! I'd just be sitting there at my desk and was sure I felt my phone buzz only to check and fine I've imagined it.

I finally turned off the vibrate function and often leave the phone on silent now. If I see you calling, great. If not, I have voicemail. I'll get back to them when I can.

I still get the phantom buzz from time to time though. :D

Probably a good idea. It's not like I actually like my cell phone. But when I leave the kids with a sitter, I suppose I need to be aware if anyone's calling. :)

I don't get the phantom buzz, but until yesterday I had the setting for a robotic voice to tell me who was calling before my ringtone started turned on. And I would -swear- I heard that sometimes but when I took out my phone no call or message. Maybe now with it turned off it'll stop happening.

You know, in background appliance noise in the house (dishwasher, washing machine, white noise machine for napping...) I sometimes swear I hear a muffled voice like someone leaving a message on the answering machine. Once in a while there actually was a message, just to confuse matters and make me hallucinate more. :)

Yes! I thought it was just me! One less reason to worry about my health and/or sanity now...

It was happening to me yesterday even when I didn't have the phone on me. Ugh.
