One of the sponsors for "Sesame Street" on our PBS station is a certain multi-location family resort chain that shall remain nameless, because I'm about to pick on their advertising copy. They say, in their voice-over:

"...because the family that plays together grows together, sharing precious moments and turning wondrous adventures into a lifetime of memories."

Or something very close to that. It befuddles my mind every time, because, jeez, they packed four cliches into the space usually reserved for one! Seriously, count 'em. We've got "the family that plays together grows together," "sharing precious moments," having "wondrous adventures," and obtaining "a lifetime of memories." Any one of those, on its own, would make for a decent, if cliched, advertising slogan. But all four at once? It's a freakin' traffic jam. Less is more, guys. There, another cliche for you. Take it with you into your weekend. And learn its precious nuances and make lifelong adventurous memories with it.

*eyeroll* Sheesh. Rip off their copy from Hallmark, did they? And the family cliche isn't even RIGHT (it's "stays" not "grows"). I prefer my ads with less of a chance of developing diabetes, thanks. (Not that I prefer ads at all, mind you.)

I wouldn't call "less is more" a cliche, though. It's an axiom, I believe.

I know, it's saccharine as well as lame. I paused over the "grows" vs. "stays"--I'm not absolutely certain which way they say it. But I do believe it's "grows," probably because they wouldn't want to imply in their happy ad that your family might not stay together. ;)

Axiom, sure, works for me. "Less is more" is also an oxymoron if you take things highly literally.

Holy Moly, she exclaimed, eyes popping in disbelief. Who would have thought it was possible? Could they be any *more* cliched?

Mildly off-topic, but I was just befuddled by an ad that informed me "If you haven't had a DUI, you're paying too much for auto insurance."

Does that mean I should grab the car keys and a bottle of tequila to bring my insurance rates down?

LOL. Yep, that's wide open to misinterpretation. Guess I must be paying too much as well. Good thing they told us how to fix that.

Gah. Just reading that made my blood sugar spike.
