Amazing--I actually care about some stuff coming up on TV in the relatively near future:

Starz is airing the miniseries The Pillars of the Earth, beginning tomorrow. I read the novel by Ken Follett about fourteen years ago, and unlike most novels I read fourteen years ago, I actually remember some of it. I know I liked it. So I'll be curious to see that--and am especially avid given that Rufus Sewell is in it. (Playing a good guy, no less!)

HBO, as all good fantasy geeks know, is hard at work on Game of Thrones, based on the G.R.R. Martin series. Click on that link, and oh LOTR fans, feel your heart swell to see Sean Bean looking ever so Boromir-y as Ned Stark.

Meanwhile, in the Doctor Who world, I'm finally watching "The End of Time" and preparing myself to let go of Tennant and embrace Matt Smith and the other newbies. I've loved Moffat's episodes so far, so I'm actually looking forward to series 5 a great deal. Whenever they get around to releasing it on DVD. Hurrah!

Whenever they get around to releasing it on DVD.

November 9th. You've got a ways to wait.

Four months...ah well, that's something to look forward to. And it's still faster than the publishing world!

There's a miniseries of Pillars of the Earth?! How did I as a medievalist miss that? I enjoyed the book - some of it made me eyeroll in a geeky-historian-way, but he covers the cathedral building brilliantly (though I'm guessing there won't be quite as much architectural detail in the show :D).

I think it'll be streamable, so I may watch it that way (we don't have cable). And yeah, I imagine the more lurid stuff will take center stage for a miniseries. :) But hey, it was fun!

Matt Smith is better than you expect him to be. He's not David Tennant, though:-/.

Ah well, I can't crush on *all* the Doctors. It'll be enough if I just enjoy the show. (And go watch Tennant in other stuff...)

There's always that. But he *said* he wanted to break Tom Baker's record. Of course, they all say that...

I happen to prefer Matt Smith to David Tennant.

Heheh--actually, that's good to hear, as it does make me optimistic for the next season.

Yes, he does a good job, really.

[Thrones spoilers - avert your eyes!]

Looks like Sean Bean is destined to be one of those actors who always dies in Volume I.

I was thinking the same thing! At least he gets a full TV season this time instead of just one (albeit long) movie (with flashback scenes later).

And I see they have Peter Dinklage as Tyrion - that by itself will be enough to get me to watch!

Peter Dinklage is the actor I want to play Miles Vorkosigan, too.

Peter Dinklage is pretty much the only possible Tyrion I thought of. Evidently everyone else thought so, too. I've loved him in all his roles I've seen so far.

Haven't read the Vorkosigan books... worth it?

YES YES A THOUSAND TIMES YES!

I am a devotee, as you may be able to tell. Seriously, do do read them; Miles Vorkosigan is a magnificent character. Imagine a young man with a desperate desire to prove himself but crippled but brilliant but so hyper that girlfriends love him but cannot cope because he is just believably too much.
He is wonderful. All the Vorkosigan books are wonderful. And there is a lot of snarky humour in there too, which is one of my favourite things.

Now I'll have to read Game of Thrones, to see who this Tyrion person is!

Sweet! I'll add the first book (though I gather they can be read in any order) to my wish list.

Tyrion isn't really a heartthrob type of character, but he's at least one of the more sympathetic ones. And the series is pretty great as otherworldly fantasy goes.

I'm 100% confident that you will love Matt Smith, and not just because he's dark-haired, blue-eyed, skinny, pale, and adorkable.

...although those things never hurt in my book. ;) I do feel ready for a new Doctor. Bring 'im on!

Ah, Sean Bean. How I adore him, even wearing some poor dead thing around his neck.

I *loved* the finale of Ten. More endings than Return of the King, but worth every bit.

And I, having now seen all of Eleven's first series, have quite the crush on Matt Smith. ;)

"some poor dead thing around his neck" - *snicker*. They do put those things on him a lot, don't they? I adore him too, though, of course.

The finale of Ten did make me all sad, but at the same time I was annoyed about that, because it's not like he was *really* dying. It was completely a farewell for the fans. One could make the case that it was a farewell for the humans who were used to that particular face of his, but that imbues them with quite a lot of shallowness if that's all they cared about. And then it makes no sense that he'd say pseudo-goodbye to a Rose who didn't yet know him. So that goodbye was for him personally...but why bother, since he'll still be alive and have all his same memories after the regeneration? Granted, I did have quite the Tennant crush, so OK, I'll be quiet now. :)

Bring on the Smith! I'm ready.
