...none of you posted about Robert Pattinson kissing another man and doing gay sex scenes for an upcoming movie. It's called Little Ashes, and (making matters substantially odder) he plays a young Salvador Dali, and I bet I'll be able to keep from snickering right up to the moment when he starts wearing the crazy up-swooped mustache. But in that kiss photo linked above, at least, and thus presumably in some of the film, he's clean-shaven.

I just have to chuckle, since a role like that is such a perfect way to discombobulate shallow teen fans. They're used to their heartthrobs doing predictable chick-flicks, action films, and heartwarming family dramas, not moving straight from Twilight to a biopic about an eccentric Spanish painter. For that, RPattz, I give you bonus points.

The LOTR fandom assured me years ago that there are millions of pervy fangirls. :) In fact, I daresay more fans are pervy than not-pervy.

Well I've read loads of Harry Potter slash-fic, and LOTR slash-fic is a requirement I think. I mean, come on ... Legolas alone was pretty enough to inspire wayyyy too much slash-fic.

But yeah, I think the only person I'll be able to convince to see Little Ashes with me is the coworker who is desperately obsessed with Robert Pattinson. LOL

But after forcing hubs to watch Twilight with me, and his less-than-enthusiastic reaction to vampires with no fangs, I wouldn't even attempt to get him to see this one. I can't even get him to watch Nip/Tuck with me due to Julian McMahon's nekkid butt making frequent appearances.

Yes, not only are some of the LOTR boys quite pretty, but there just *aren't* many female characters around most of the time. The only pairings that make sense are slash, practically. :) Then JK Rowling keeps making all these "wand" connotation remarks, which invite the HP slash too...

But yeah, we can never expect the straight men to get in on this with us. It's just never their thing.

Hey, wait, I'm a straight guy! Although I admit the eye-candy aspect does nothing for me; I guess I'm just attracted to the inherently transgressive nature of slash. Wait, I think I'm quoting myself; better reset the pomposity filter.

Next time I'm tempted to say I've just got a juvenile sense of pervy humor, I'll call it an admiration for slash's "inherently transgressive nature" instead. Sounds much more respectable. :)

Is femslash any more attractive? Willow/Tara do anything for you and such...? (Well, they're canon, so that isn't femslash, but still.)

Hmm, I thought you'd said you were for Hermione/Viktor and Harry/Cho?

I don't exactly ship anyone in HP, but I admit HMS Harmony has always made a lot more sense to me than the canon pairings.

Well, yes. I think Harry's and Hermione's firsts were much better for them than the people they eventually ended up with. And I've ranted elsewhere, frequently and at length, about the not-at-all-veiled Anglocentrism and what the author's choices for the characters say about construction of Otherness. Having a protagonist's first be an Other who can then be conveniently discarded after paving the way for the author's preferred, ethnically appropriate choice is probably my least favorite romantic-fiction cliche... whoa, ratchet back, Naill, take a deep breath. Don't even get started on JKR's comments about keeping the cast of the movies "all British..."

Oh, right, shipping. Am I going to post on shipping again? Thank goodness this post is far enough back in the past that no one but you is likely to notice; that should keep the flames down.

By the time Book 7 rolls around, it's pretty clear that Cho and Viktor have been so marginalized that they're off the table, so to speak. (Not quite ready to google "Cho and Viktor on the table...") So I'm willing to accept that those pairings don't make sense for story reasons. The defining moment of Harry's generation is the battle of the Dept. of Mysteries (which is why I had Harry give, or try to give, the St. Crispin's Day speech before they headed in.) The six kids in Harry's posse yield nine het pairings (since it's pretty obvious that's the way JKR is heading, we can -- with a touch of melancholy -- dismiss the slash pairings). And one of those nine pairings is Weasleycest, and we can be very sure JKR isn't headed that way. So of the remaining choices, the most appealing, at least to me, are Neville/Ginny, Ron/Luna, and Harry/Hermione.

I can see the story problem again -- H/H leaves Ron pretty much completely out of things, unless a much bigger role for Luna is written in. Not that I would object to that...

Good points. There's a weirdly old-fashioned British cliquishness/patriotism to the HP books, which is especially weird since she also tries to make a point of denouncing such cliquishness if (and only if) it occurs in the upper classes. Then again, "Malfoy," "LeStrange"...those names look suspiciously FRENCH. Ah ha!

The "all British" casting request rubbed me the wrong way too. Can you *imagine* the cries of imperialism/racism/etc. if some American said something similar? Say, if Stephenie Meyer insisted that the Twilight cast be "all American"? (Which, as a Mormon from a red state, she might have secretly wished, but at least she's been smart enough to embrace British RPattz as her Edward.) Granted, I get the impression Meyer had little to no say in the movie production, unlike Rowling, so she probably had lawyers explain the situation quite thoroughly to her beforehand--and I imagine it involved a remark like, "Do you want to look like that nutjob Anne Rice, hollering her head off about the casting of Tom Cruise as Lestat? Did that do her any favors? Nooo."

Got a bit off track there, but still. Good points. :)

It seems odd that the UK, given its rather distressing histroy in those areas, should get a pass on imperialism and racism... But I don;t think it does. I think it's just JKR who does, because if anyone dares call her on it too loudly or publicly, her fans will crush that person like a Rita Skeeter Animagus Beetle. But now that it's over and she has no sword to hold over our favorite characters' heads, her powers of fandom control may be waning.

Yeah, I bet there was more outcry in the UK itself about JKR's remark; it possibly just didn't filter to my ears over here. From my visits there, I recall they did as much self-flagellation (if not more) than America does regarding Rather Big Mistakes Of History.

It will be interesting to see if her future writings gain anywhere near the foothold and influence of the HP verse...
