I'm messing around with Facebook (no, I don't really know why), and it perplexes me. Is it basically like the profile page of LJ, without the actual blog function? Or am I missing something?

The one benefit I can see is being able to find people by their real names. Other than that... ??

(Yeah, go ahead. Friend me over there. I'll return the favor, whatever that's worth.)

Facebook is good for stalking finding people. I actually really like it, but I think it may be more useful if you have a lot of friends on it as a lot of my social life is arranged through the events function etc. But it's also good for finding out stuff about old friends without having to give them access to something as personal as livejournal. :)

Ah, I see how the Evite similarities could come in handy. I guess the privacy bit doesn't apply so well to me, since I slapped my real name (or at least my original real name) on both FB and LJ. :) I'll just friends-lock the stuff that's really private...

I find Facebook reasonably easy to use especially for communicating with former students I'm still in contact with and with long-distance associates.

Other than that, it can be annoying when people keep bombarding you with applications and other things like that. I check it-maybe- once a week, which is about all I get to do with LJ anymore. Kevon is friending you and I maybe whoring you out to my very good-looking musician/artist buddy in Seattle (as well as his less handsome brother).

It does seem to make a lot more sense for those who are oriented around school or a certain company. As I browse it more, I see the attraction--sort of an LJ-lite, in a way.

Someone added me from around here...I'll assume it's one of those guys. :)

It's not supposed to be a blog. It is more like the profile page, for connecting up with friends and keeping in touch. You can update statuses and put in your job and school and play games and the like. If you need to do something blog-like you can write notes, but that's really not the purpose of the site.

Yeah, I'm beginning to see the way it's used, the more I browse. I can imagine rather liking the lighter (than LJ) format, actually...

Yeah, it's a great way to keep in touch. I'm connected up with most of my high school and college friends on there. There are some privacy concerns which you should read up on - unfortunately the company hasn't always had the best instincts about how to introduce new features and how to deal with sharing information with other companies. I've been sticking with them because I've been on from the very beginning; it started at my school, and pretty much everyone I knew there is on there.

As far as I can tell, it seems to primarily be a way for people to play online games together. :-)

Supreme time-wasting potential, as I said. But at least in a fun way. :)

Sorry, I meant "Scrabulous." Which despite having the same board, the same rules, and the same tiles, is an entirely different game. [smiles nervously at the lawyers]

Heheh. Ah, well, I do see the attraction of the Scrabble-like possibilities.

You can use the notes function to blog if you want. I find it's quite handy, more for knowing what's going on, upcoming gigs, or events. Usually because friends have signed up to them and you see them in the not-updated-enough-newsfeed, it also makes stalking so much easier. "one of your friends is stalking you - can you work out who it is?" - that would be a disturbingly amusing app for FaceBoobs.

What I find is odd people you didn't like or who don't like you have an odd tendancy to try and 'friend' you on FaceBoobs. Not sure why. It is fantastic for wasting time playing silly games and arsing about at work though.

Yeah, I'm already sensing the great time-wasting potential, to say nothing of the stalking potential. :) So I'm glad I've added you to help take care of those possibilities.

I am there - come and find me - I have pictures of my gorgeous little baby boy, who actually isn't my baby any more. He's more my beloved toddler.

Yay for toddlers! I know what you mean; I have to catch myself saying "baby" nowadays and turn it into "little guy" or something.

OK, apparently my stalking skills aren't so good, because I don't know how to find you over there. If I knew your real name, I've forgotten it. Hrm. Hint?

I keep getting Facebook and LinkedIn invitations from real-world friends -- where do they find the time? It's been months since I've even been able to update my LJ.

Maybe people without kids live in a different universe.

Oops, sorry, that last line didn't come out quite right... I've really just been taking painkillers all day, not grouch pills.

Heheh. Don't worry. As someone who just dragged herself out of bed after a night of sleep loss due to pointless toddler crying, I read your line with perfect comprehension. It is definitely a different world over here. :)
