We've now watched disc 2, featuring episodes "Tooth and Claw," "School Reunion," and "The Girl in the Fireplace." Really enjoyed them all. Though the Doctor's temporary Scottish accent was tasty and delightful, and of course it's fun to think of royal werewolf issues, I liked the second two episodes better for (Evil Giles! and also...) the depths they showed in the Doctor's character--particularly as he relates to Earth women.

The return of Sarah Jane was poignant, uncovering the Doctor's buried tenderness for the companions he's had to abandon, and my heart twisted up at his frustrated outburst to Rose about the agony in not being able to spend the rest of his life with any Earthling. I also felt pretty sorry for Rose, who's looking smaller and younger and more insignificant alongside the mature Sarah Jane, but I'm glad they could relate to each other by the end.

And then Madame de Pompadour! Ooh la la. This might be my favorite episode so far. It was just beautiful--funny, tender, lavish, dreamworld-weird, and romantic as a balcony full of rose petals. It encapsulated the Doctor's position perfectly too: in roughly one day, for him, he blazes through Reinette's entire life, their brief encounters sustaining her hopes through all her slowly passing years. What girl wouldn't fall in love with that man hopping out of her bedroom fireplace?

Also, that was one hot snog. I must say. I read Sophia Myles and David Tennant were dating at the time (still are?), so thus the chemistry. She sure is gorgeous. I'm 97% straight, but I'd snog her myself. (Though the Doctor remains my first choice, thank you.)

But jumping through a mirror on a horse into a party of 18th-century revelers: is it me, or was that adapted from an Adam Ant video?

Um... I think you'll find that was probably David Tennant's actual accent he's from the West coast of Scotland.

Ah, no wonder he sounded so good at it. Once again I should look things up before I post about them. Thanks--have changed "faux" to "temporary." :)

They were together, but just recently broke up. Sad, because they looked so cute together!

Too bad. Would've had gorgeous children.

*grins at the Tennant Face icon* Very good imitation.

Thank you! My friend was spamming me with John Simm photos and this one was just screaming "LOOK AT ME, I'M TENNANT BWAHAHAHA"

Huh, they broke up? I haven't seen that posted anywhere; do you by any chance have a link that has the story?

Not off-hand, sorry. But I remember seeing it a month or so ago on ONTD and a couple of the Doctor Who comms.

Okay, so that was Giles! Yay! I thought I recognized him, but wasn't sure, since it's been ages since I watched any Buffy, and what I watched was very scattered and sporadic.

And Girl in the Fireplace may be my favorite of this season so far. Although I still really like Tooth and Claw. The gal they got to play Queen Victoria was awesome.

Definitely Giles. Good to see him again!

Yes, I liked that Queen Vic wasn't too absurdly stuffy as the stereotype would have us believe.

They actually got together after they met filming that episode, so I'm not sure they were technically a couple when that kiss was filmed. ;)

Yay! All of those episodes you mentioned are delightful in every way. :-) I loved reading your thoughts! It's fun to fangirl!!!

David's Scottish accent is just gorgeous!

Thanks! It truly is a delight to be such a fangirl again, distracting though it is to real life. :)

I particularly loved "School Reunion" when I first saw it. It immediately sent me over to YouTube to find video clips of Sarah Jane and the fourth Doctor (my first Doctor).

*nod* Even without having seen much early Who, I appreciate that they're bringing back old characters or villains for the true fans, and introducing us that way.

I loooooooove Tony Head. I don't know from Giles, but I adored him in Imagine Me & You. To BITS. And GitF is one of my favorites, too. Written by Steven Moffat, who is hands DOWN my favorite Who writer (he also did the WWII eps in the first season that introduced Jack, and the best ep of the 3rd). I believe GitF won a Hugo Award.

I watched most of S2 the last couple nights after my NaNo'ing. Hee. The show is entirely full of love.

Ah, Tony Head is in that flick? Cool. I've been curious about it; now I must see it. He was my first Buffyverse crush, actually. So cute and Brit-geeky.

I read the same about the Hugo award. Well deserved!

Congrats on doing so well in NaNoWriMo, btw!

I haven't seen any other Tennant episodes yet (they're among the many DVDs that I have to get around to renting), but I did make a point of watching School Reunion on YouTube because I wanted to see Sarah Jane again.

My brother and I watched a lot of Dr. Who in high school - all of the Tom Baker eps. and most of the Jon Pertwee and Peter Davison ones. I've always been fond of Sarah Jane (my brother was too, but in a straight way...), so this episode really touched me. Liz Sladen was great, plus she's still looking good after all these years.

Oh, and it was fun to see Tony Head being evil.

I didn't see much early Who, but I like how they're introducing us occasionally to old characters or villains--and making old Who fans happy in the process, hopefully.

Liz Sladen did look great. May we all age so well!

When I showed "School Reunion" to a couple of ladies who were new Who fans, I made sure to dig out the last 10 minutes of "The Face of Evil" (the last SJ story) for context.

Despite the hideous medical technology of "Girl in the Fireplace", I think that and "School Reunion" are my favorites of Series Two.

Date: 2007-11-24 10:33 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] mollyringle.livejournal.com
I should look up the old episode, though I feel I got the context, more or less, without it.

Yeah, the heart in the machinery was a bit disturbing, eh?

Date: 2007-11-25 01:53 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] mikailborg.livejournal.com
Heh, I was actually talking about the science. A human heart ripped from a body with no nervous connections, protective tissue, or blood supply would make a terrible fuel pump... and in short order would be no use at all. But hey, the episode was too cool to worry much about that.

And I need to make a correction: the SJ story was "Hand of Fear" - "Face of Evil" was the first Leela story, shortly thereafter. Looks like I'm having anatomy confusion as well. :)

Hello from a stranger who's been following Molly Ringwraith for a bit... I don't wish to intrude, but I do have to offer this lovely to anyone enjoying our lovely Ten and especially his lovely Scottish accent. :)

Hello and welcome! I've seen your username around; you're not entirely a stranger. :)

Hah--that's hilarious! And indeed, very lovely for the accent in use. "Do you fancy Billie Piper?" Hee hee...

I mentioned once that I thought someone was more suited for The Doctor than Rose.. you found my choice. I actually teared up in that episode and I am not someone who cries over romances. I will re-watch it again and again.

You are right, it is somewhat like an Adam Ant video. Kevon and I mentioned the horse through the mirror bit as well (I keep expecting Tennant to sing "Stand & Deliver"). The clockwork men are fantastically creepy.

Season Two is such fun...

Cool! I didn't expect your choice to be a non-regular character, but my surprise is pleasant. The Reinette romance was too gorgeous to be resisted.

The clockwork guys were both impressive and creepy, and I loved the Doctor's admiration of their machinery. I inadvertently chose this icon before seeing that episode, and I'm glad I have one from that scene.

I bet Tennant would do a good Adam Ant impression if he set his talents to it. Here's hoping. ;)

I also have a secret slashy-thing for the Master and the Doctor as well. This "ship" goes back to my other favorite Doctor (Doctor 5).

Since I am being honest, I have something more devious to admit.
Recently Five and Ten were in a charity skit together--WOWZERS. It was great fun and got my debauched mind spinning. I'm not sure if regenerations can have a relationship per se. I assume it would be more of a self-love situation wouldn't it? Nonetheless, if I were Five I would have kissed Ten.

Alas...

Date: 2007-11-27 01:11 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] mollyringle.livejournal.com
Hmm, wonder if that charity skit is on YouTube somewhere? Sounds fun to check out. And indeed, I could think of some amusing self-love paradox situations for the Five/Ten pairing (if "pairing" is the right word here). I haven't browsed Whofic.com extensively, but I bet someone else has thought of such things too. ;)

I don't think I've met the Master yet. I'll have to try on the slash goggles when I do.

And speaking of deviousness, from what I have seen on Whofic, it seems that the fandom makes much of Ten's "oral fixation". He does lick things as a way of identifying them quite often...hmm...stands to reason...

*mind wanders*

The Master makes me think kinky.

John Simm (who plays Bernard Sumner in 24 Hour Party People) plays the Master in season three. Just you wait. Points to icon.

I'm sure the sketch is on YouTube by now - try searching for 'Doctor Who Children in Need'. The sketch was written by Steven Moffatt, and, like all his episodes so far, is just perfect.

Found it! Hah. So cute. Loved Ten's giddy, geeky teasing of Five. "Oh, the brainy specs!"

Date: 2007-12-05 09:00 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] shebit.livejournal.com
Ten's assertion that the Fifth was his Doctor may have made me tear up a little. We all have our favourite Doctors, so why shouldn't the Doctor have a favourite too?

The Fifth is certainly the previous regeneration he's most like - young and dynamic and excitable but prone to fits of rage. And with trainers and reading specs.

From: [identity profile] mollyringle.livejournal.com
It's a fun idea, certain versions of the Doctor grouping closer to other versions. Mind-warping in a way, but fun.

Specs he doesn't technically need! I always wondered about that. Now we know.

He only wears them because he thinks they make him look clever. Bless him.

Incidentally, Tennant does wear specs and apparently has terrible vision without them, but he wears contacts for the roll and then wears the fake glasses (with plain glass lenses).

From: [identity profile] mollyringle.livejournal.com
They do make him look clever--and extremely cute. Granted, he's extremely cute without them too; it's just nice to have options.

Hmm, wonder what Tennant's usual specs look like...

From: [identity profile] shebit.livejournal.com
Sadly, his everyday glasses are not the Doctor's funky black specs.
