Note One: One or two alcoholic drinks a day might lower risk of heart attacks, but definitely raises risk of a bazillion kinds of cancer. Hm, heart attack or cancer? I'll take heart attack, thanks. I'm sticking to my "dark chocolate with every meal but alcohol only a couple times a week" diet.

Note Two: I finally saw An Officer and a Gentleman. I liked it--you get a good eyeful of our Puget Sound scenery. Also, I now finally see what Hot Shots! was parodying, aside from Top Gun. Hee.

Note Three: Still time to sign up for Operation Ichabod. Read a line, be spooky, be awesome.

My parents managed the motel O&G was filmed in in Port Townsend. This was a few years after the movie came out. You can not believe how many people asked to stay in the room where the guy hung himself!

It was probably one of my favourite places to live. Unfortunately, the owners were nuts.

Cool! I recognized some of the locales, even though I've only been to Port Townsend a couple times. Very charming town!

Everything would appear to cause cancer these days, someone will no doubt claim that standing in front of a fridge on a Tuesday when it's raining will be more likely to give you cancer than standing in front of it on a Friday when it's sunny.

My point? Stories like this are always surfacing, I'd take them with a pinch of salt as some contradictory evidence is no doubt on the way, and I'd take that with a pinch of salt too when it comes along and so on and so forth. Then all that salt will probably make me feel ill or something.

True for some of these random studies, but unfortunately the link between alcohol and cancer is long-established in hundreds of separate studies. In this case it seems to be the "red wine is good for you!" story that needs to be taken with the grain of salt.

Operation Ichabod phone posts are up... they are under "friends only".
Should they be public?

Thank you! Those work fine. I was able to download them as mp3's and splice them into my master file. And, you know, I'm really disappointed you guys don't sound like Southern hicks. *sigh*

Seriously, you both sound very pleasant and intelligent, and this may actually be the first time I've heard Kevon's voice in particular, so that was especially cool. Gold stars for being the first to turn your lines in, too!

Everyone in Virginia seems to be losing his/her accent. For me, it was that speech therapy I had to endure in 2nd grade. :)
I usually deepen my voice when I am teaching, but that's my everyday cadence.

With both Kev and I, certain words bring out a more "Southern" accent especially when we're talking quickly.

You both have some Southern cadence and pronunciation, though much less so than folks in, say, Mississippi. Kev's accent seems to be a little "stronger" than yours (judging from the one sentence sample), which is common; i.e., men are usually less troubled to disguise their native accents, while women are likelier to adjust theirs to some perceived higher-status dialect.

Still, linguists insist that American accents are not all starting to blend together; they're supposedly just changing from what they were. It'll be interesting to see what the "new" Virginia accent becomes, and maybe we on the West Coast will develop more distinct ones too. (One for L.A., another for S.F., another for western OR/WA, etc...)

I first saw O&G on an airplane with the sound not working, which hardly made for an optimal viewing experience...

Hee. No, Richard Gere doesn't have the most expressive face...

Richard Gere makes Legolas and Oz look expressive.

Now I'm imagining a conversation between Oz and Legolas:

LEGOLAS: You are a werewolf?
OZ: Yeah. Are you really an Elf?
LEGOLAS: Yes, I am.
OZ: Cool.
[long silence ensues]

Hehehe.

OZ: You're not going to try to kill me, are you?
LEGOLAS: Only if necessary.
OZ: Okay. Cool.

[another long silence]

Yes. Oz would want to confirm that Legolas wasn't getting any silver-tipped arrows ready for him. Love your icon - that scene always cracks me up.
