And rounding things out, the Best Movies I Saw in 2006:

I found it hard to pick favorites or rank them, so, by my own odd categories:

"Everybody else is giving them awards, so why can't I?":
Brokeback Mountain
Walk the Line
Capote

All three deserved their accolades for being well-acted, thought-provoking, and haunting.

"Fun in animation":
Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit
Howl's Moving Castle

The latter played havoc with the book plot, but was still gorgeous; the former was just goofy and funny.

"The 'written by Tennessee Williams' award":
Baby Doll
The Night of the Iguana

Williams is hard to classify, which is probably why I'm drawn to his stuff. That, and it's clever and weird and sexy-kinda.

"Kicking butt and taking names in galaxies and otherworlds":
MirrorMask
Serenity

Neil Gaiman for the first; Joss Whedon for the second. What more do you need to know?

"Special fluff award":
Casanova
In which Heath Ledger and everybody else are very silly and very pretty.

"Documentary, or maybe not":
Riding Giants
Incident at Loch Ness

The former convinced me I'm never taking up surfing; the latter almost convinced me it wasn't a mockumentary--though it is.

"Catch-all drama award":
Everything Is Illuminated
Reversal of Fortune
A Very Long Engagement

Respectively, a unique Ukrainian road trip movie, a based-on-truth legal case with Jeremy "I'm Always Fascinating" Irons, and a poignant romantic tale of lovers separated in World War I.

And that's to say nothing of all the TV series I've watched on Netflix. Good investment.

The DVD of Everything Is Illuminated is worth it for the deleted scene that shows you why the main character is scared of dogs and the other deleted scenes are fantastic too particularly the alternative footage for the part where the Ukrainian bloke is narrating about his life at the start.

And it's just a very good film too.

We Netflixed it, so we did see the extra scenes. They were funny, but I personally am glad they left them out of the final edition. They would have changed the tone completely.

As for Little Miss Sunshine, I simply haven't seen it yet; so maybe it will be on this year's "best" list!

I've just realised there is no Little Miss Sunshine in this list! That's a crime!
