I meant to ask you guys:
When visiting my hometown in Oregon a few weeks ago, we noticed that the high school guys were wearing their polo-shirt collars turned up. And I spotted checkered Vans on a high school gal. Is 1986 happening all over again all over the nation? Or did Corvallis get a really outdated memo?

In other news, my nose for perfume is returning, after going on revolt during pregnancy. Hurrah! I can now say that I am liking the Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab scent "Velvet," which I had a vial of from last year. Chocolatey, with dusty sandalwood beneath. Mmm. I also sampled the (non-BPAL) unisex fragrance Inis: Energy of the Sea. It smells quite a lot like L'Eau d'Issey, only not as overpowering, so that's good. But I'm not sure I'm sold on this ozonic/aquatic/citrusy/unisex thing. It's very 1990s. Still, I didn't have a desire to wash it off my arm, which is more than I can say for the Lolita Lempicka I sampled the other week. Yeeks.

Aye, this look has been going on for about two or three years or so in the D.C. Metro area. Old Navy and Hollister (and the like) even go as far as putting (supposedly) nifty little designs under the collar so it looks really "swell" when turned up. The checkered Vans are falling out of favor here lately. Leather docksiders and the boat shoes are the new "IT" shoe for the Lacoste-wearing- hipster-indie-prep. The scene-emo kids are favoring vintage-syled New Balance or KangaRoos and Doc Marten variations (or Keds for the girls in the spring months). At the high school where I teach, we have much more of the hipster prep/nerdy-indie-prep (think of Brian from The Breakfast Club) look instead of the emo/scene look. I actually don't mind the preppy variations all in all, especially when girls mix them with some older vintage styles.

At least it's a pleasant change from the '70s styles we've had for so long. Logical progression, too. Not looking forward so much to the return of grunge fashion in ten years, though. :)

On the subject, I returned from Germany a couple days ago, and every male I saw who was able to turn his collar up had done so. I'm not sure why. I believe there may be a connection to the frightening numbers of men there wearing flared capris. Possibly Germans are just particularly susceptible to eerie fashion-oriented alien brainwaves....

Heh! Well, yes, Europe is usually on a different wavelength, fashion-wise, than America. In '96 in the UK I spotted a lot of British guys wearing slightly pirate-ish drawstring-v-neck shirts...which never happened here.
