Did you know you could make vinaigrette out of jam?*

Basic formula seems to be:
1/3 cup jam (pretty much any flavor)
1/4 cup olive oil
1/4 cup vinegar
salt/pepper to taste

Whisk all ingredients together. Remove big clumps of fruit/seeds for best results. Voila.

Ordinarily in a vinaigrette you want less vinegar than oil. But in this one you might want equal amounts, or even more vinegar than oil, to counteract the excessive sweetness of the jam. Taste as you go; you'll get it right. Tried it tonight with blackcurrant jam. Much better than expected. A trick to be used again.

* I realize the answer could quite possibly be, "Yes, I already knew that. What are you, stupid? Been living under a rock where they don't get culinary news?" Getting lambasted for sharing new things you learned is part of the joy of posting on the internet. On the other hand, there may be some people - intelligent people, even; good people - for whom the answer is, "Why, no, I never tried that." And maybe those people need vinaigrette, and have extra jam, and also happen to love household tips. So for you, my Ideal Reader, I submit this tidbit.

How the Amazon.com ratings would go if this were a product they sold:

FIVE STARS from MaryJo in Kennewick - Love it!!! Best salad dressing ever, and soooo easy! Try it; you won't regret it!

ONE STAR from KeriAnn in Gresham - Ick!! Grossest thing I ever tasted!!! DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME!!!!! Why don't they let us give ZERO stars???!!!

(Yes, I spent some time today trying to compile a registry on Amazon, and got quite exasperated with the contradictory user reviews for every single imaginable product. Who can you trust? MaryJo, or KeriAnn, or who, I ask you?)

Excellent, then. (That icon is rather entertaining...)

Thanks. That's one of the ones of mine that I'll occasionally see copied elsewhere. The one that gets me though is the anime one above that I made out of a [livejournal.com profile] nnnslogan animation and use as my personal icon. Sometimes I'll see somebody posting with that one and think, "Wait, no. That's me!"

Interesting, but I'm scared it's some weird pregnancy craving

;)

And for the record, I dont think you're stupid. The height of my culinary skills is microwaving whatever is in the fridge. Half the time I eat the food cold. I tried to make mashed potatos when I had my wisdom teeth removed and instead of putting 2/3 teaspoons of salt in, I put in 2/3 of a cup in. Whoops.

I have no weird pregnancy cravings. All the weird things I like to eat now are the same weird things I've always liked. ;)

Eek on the salt... Reminds me of the time my younger sister made hummus, and didn't know how much a "clove" of garlic was. She ended up deciding it was the entire head of garlic. So instead of, say, two cloves of garlic in the recipe, there were two *heads* of garlic. It was, uh, pungent.

Why no, I never tried that, and although I don't need vinaigrette, I do have extra jam, and I love household tips. So one day when I do need vinaigrette, I will keep it in mind.

Thank you.

And you can only trust your instincts when it comes to amazon reviews.

Enjoy. I think the cool thing about the jam idea is the range of flavor possibilities. Raspberry vinaigrette, sure, we've all had that; but how about blueberry? Blackberry? Apricot, dare I say?
