Good chocolate; bad philosophy. (And some music.)

Dove makes, in my opinion, the best chocolate you can get in the regular candy aisle--i.e., general price range of Hershey and Nestle; not the expensive "gourmet" chocolate. In fact I like it better than some gourmet chocolate. It beats the stuffing out of Lindt any day if you ask me. However: Dove Promises, the little individually-wrapped squares you get in a bag, come with sayings printed on the inside of the wrappers. And the sayings are often pretty lame.

"When two hearts race, both win," one wrapper says today. Hmm. I suppose they mean, "When two people are in love and their hearts are racing, it's a win-win situation." OK. That's kind of cute. But there are reasons other than love that your heart might race. For instance, fear. Say you and a friend are in the woods and you encounter a tiger, and your hearts start racing. And then you put up a good fight but the tiger kills you both. I'd say nobody won there despite the racing hearts (except of course the tiger).

Better than this one, though, found on a Dove wrapper years ago: "Time is a river without banks."
...I just have no idea what that is even supposed to mean. (Perhaps no one else did either, which could account for why I haven't seen it since.)

While I'm on the subject...the old chestnut, "You attract more flies with honey than with vinegar" has been bothering me a little. I agree with the sentiment, definitely--charm is generally a better method than harshness--and the vinegar v. honey metaphor works for me. But when, in any point in history, did anyone ever want to attract flies? "You attract more diamonds with honey than with vinegar" would be more apt, if it made any sense. We need to work on that one.

"Time is a river without banks."

Well, a river is ever-flowing, like time. But if you're flowing down the river, and get hung up on a bank, you stop, and banks can change the direction of a river. You can't stop time, you can't change the direction of time (not without some seriously geeky physics).

It's still lame, but maybe that's what they meant?

So they're saying "You can't stop time any more than you can stop a flash flood"? That could be. Guess it's the best explanation I've heard yet--though still not exactly deep or enlightening. Heh.

Also, sometimes banks are there *because* of the river; the river cuts into the ground and creates the banks. So then are they saying ...time...doesn't cut into anything...and thus...doesn't leave any marks on the landscape? Hm.

I better open some more chocolates and look for better ones. :)

I've always heard the cliche stated as you catch more flies with honey than vinegar, which would make more sense because in that scenario one would be trapping the flies, not attracting them.

The Dove saying is a rip off of some other old cliche about time being like a river, but they added the "without banks" part, as far as I know. It probably means that you time flows on whether you want it to or not, and you can't pause on the banks, or something like that. Not very profund. ;-)
