Talked to one of my older sisters the other night, who said she sometimes reads this journal, so: If you're reading, K8, hi! And no, you're not spying on me by being here. :) Total strangers get to comment, after all.

She also has written a very cute and cool children's book, so if any of you know publishers for such things, drop me a line and we'll have your people talk to her people. It deserves to be seen!

In other random thoughts: a month or so ago I told a different sister, my younger one, that I found Dave Foley cute, and she shook her head as if considering me a lost cause, and sighed, "You like girly men."

Now, really. It's true I tend to like fellows with long eyelashes and slender physique and boyish smiles, but I don't think they would appreciate being called "girly men." I much prefer the term "pretty boys"...though actually I doubt they would like being called that, either. :)

Tying together the subjects of "pretty" and Dave Foley, I remembered and looked up this delightful bit of dialogue from an old episode of NewsRadio:

Beth: Pretty means pretty. Cute means pretty but short and/or hyperactive-- like me!
Lisa: Uh huh. What is beautiful?
Beth: Beautiful means pretty and tall.
Lisa: Gorgeous?
Beth: Pretty with great hair.
Lisa: Striking?
Beth: Pretty with a big nose.
Lisa: OK, you're making this up.
Beth: That's ridiculous, why would I make it up?
Lisa: Sexy?
Beth: Pretty and easy.
Lisa: Exotic?
Beth: Ugly.

These definitions have stuck in my mind ever since seeing the episode however many years ago, since actually they seem to be kind of true. Amusing to us sociolinguists, if nothing else.
