My husband has pointed out a minor flaw in the timing of this California recall. The U.C. just (finally) mailed us our diplomas, which feature, among other things, Gray Davis' signature. If this all had happened just a little sooner, we could have had free Schwarzenegger autographs, dammit! Am formulating plan to send xeroxed copies of the diplomas to the governor's mansion and ask them please to cross out Gray's name and have Arnold sign instead.

Anyway, [livejournal.com profile] radiofreecarbon also was nice enough to get the diplomas framed, so they look all pretty now. A Master of Science and a Master of Arts, with "all the rights and privileges pertaining thereto," they say. Which reminds me: if anyone out there happens to know what these rights and privileges are, please contact me.

Along those lines...
I'm supposed to be thinking about the job I'm currently in, and whether I'm interested in doing it for the foreseeable future. Given that my definition of "foreseeable future" is never more than about six months, I'd say, yeah, I can handle that. But for actual careers, other than the ever-present "writer", I am thinking whether I could deal with being a speech pathologist. I don't know that I'd be the best person with patients, but then again it's not like you're dealing with cancer where half your patients would die on you. And, more to the point, when I did a search in the Seattle job classifieds on "language," the first dozen or so hits were for Speech/Language Pathologists or Speech Therapists. I did enjoy my phonetics classes way more than I expected to, so maybe someday I could pursue that (plus, U.W. has a stellar Speech-&-Language-Pathology program). Then I'd feel I was actually helping someone with what I do, and had a distinguished job, rather than just being a harmless assistant and indulging myself with fiction writing on the side.

Still, being a harmless assistant at a reputable construction firm isn't bad for the time being. At least I morally approve of renovating buildings and putting up new hospitals and things, so I can get behind what the company does.

Must go answer phones now.
