One more Bella vs. Buffy

I didn't technically "grow up" with Buffy (Anne Rice's vampires, maybe, which is a whole different kettle of undead fish), but this is still pretty awesome.

Seriously. Buffy is a much better lesson. And it was what her creator intended. Odd, then, that Buffy was created by a man, and Bella by a woman.

Indeed odd about the gender-switched creators. We women writers need to step up and fix this. I'll say this much for Meyer: she does accurately deliver the insane feel of a teen girl obsessed with a boy. Given that fiction isn't always about role models, I guess that's okay...but it means we adults get way more annoyed with Bella whereas we repeatedly applaud Buffy.

I know, Giles isn't exactly relevant here, but he's too cute not to post. ;)

YES. Which is why when I was 13-15, this would have been my favorite series of books EVER.

And why my daughter will not read them when she is this age, not over my dead body!

Oh, I know, I daresay I would have been one of those weepingly obsessed Twilight fans if I'd been that age when they came out. (It's a good thing for my self-esteem that blogs didn't exist when I was a teenager, truly.) But I do encounter lots of teen girls who snort in derision at the series, or at least recognize that it's got a terrible portrait of relationships even if they enjoy the surface-level entertainment of it, so there is hope!

SO true. I'm following a deconstruction of the first Twilight book over at www.anamardoll.com. Never having read the books, I'm getting more and more alarmed by the quoted portions. My daughter will have to be very sneaky if she wants to read that tripe, because I won't have it in my house.
(If, on the other hand, she wants to read Dracula or watch Buffy, I will lend her my copies.)

Yeah, I think she does that really well. If Stephenie Meyer wasn't a screaming fangirl herself, she'd have used that to then turn things on their head and show how crushes are fine but they can go too far. But she genuinely believes Edward is the best thing ever...!

Dang, just looking at some of those quotes is making me think I wouldn't like the first book near as much this time around if I re-read it. (I did like it originally, but the series started annoying me more, the more I read of it. I stopped after book 3.) At least Dracula and Buffy have some cultural clout. :)

I go back and watch that every few months or weeks. It's just so satisfying. Also, I'd like to note that it's probably wrong to have Edward wearing noticeably more lipstick than Buffy.
