Helpful email from Amazon

We've noticed that customers who have purchased or rated "Wuthering Heights (Penguin Classics)" by Emily Brontë have also purchased "The Penguin Classics Library Complete Collection: More than 1000 of the Greatest Classics". For this reason, you might like to know that "The Penguin Classics Library Complete Collection: More than 1000 of the Greatest Classics" is now available. You can order yours for just $7,989.50 ($5,423.80 off the list price) by following the link below.

(Boldface mine.)

Um...maybe some other time, thanks.

(In other news: it snowed! And it's very cold. But pretty.)

I'll bet they're moving lots of that one in this economic climate.

Yeah. Now is a good time to be getting one's classics from the library.

Amazon is always being helpful. Anything I even look at (much less buy) they'll be there trying to be helpful.

Still Amazon is the only place I really shop at for books or cds. Some electronics too. They try to be helpful, but the public loves it. One of the few dot coms that made it.

I do like seeing what they recommend, sometimes. They get it right on occasion.

Lots of great books at less than 8 bucks each? Great deal.
Having to buy 1000 in one batch? Er, not so good.

Sigh.

Yeah, I just don't know what I would do with them all at once. Where would I put them, for one thing?

[identity profile] astroman-rich.livejournal.com 2008-12-14 06:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I wonder how many of them have decent Gutenberg copies...

[identity profile] mollyringle.livejournal.com 2008-12-15 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I wondered too. And anyway, where would I put 1000 books??

[identity profile] astroman-rich.livejournal.com 2008-12-16 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
Hmmmm, have you counted how many books you presently own? :-)

I find that there's always a bit of space that can be used to house another book or two. Those cupboards above the refrigerator would just be used for dishes you never use, right?

[identity profile] mollyringle.livejournal.com 2008-12-17 07:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm, haven't counted, but I did just realphabetize all the fiction (things to do when it's icy outside), so I know we have room for about 20 more new books, not 1000. We'd need more shelves, and would have to rearrange furniture in a major way...

I'm hoping it's intended for people who are stocking a new library or something. Otherwise I can't figure it out.

[identity profile] modmerseygirl.livejournal.com 2008-12-14 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Woah! I'd pass, too. ;-)

[identity profile] mollyringle.livejournal.com 2008-12-15 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
And takes up way too much shelf space. :)

[identity profile] kenshi.livejournal.com 2008-12-15 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
A little light reading, eh?

[identity profile] mollyringle.livejournal.com 2008-12-15 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Indeed. And I thought my to-be-read list was long already.

P.S. We'll try to come to your 20th and 25th events--provided ice doesn't coat all the roads again in a major way. (Jeez, I sound like my mom.)

[identity profile] gavinworld.livejournal.com 2008-12-15 04:50 am (UTC)(link)
Yikes. Even if I could afford them, I wouldn't have the shelf space for them.

[identity profile] mollyringle.livejournal.com 2008-12-15 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly. Who does? (The kind of people who can afford them, I guess.)

[identity profile] gavinworld.livejournal.com 2008-12-15 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Yup. If I were furnishing the library in my dream house, maybe...

Buy ten sets, and save more than $54,000! You can get rich that way!

Or maybe there's a flaw I haven't spotted yet.

[identity profile] mollyringle.livejournal.com 2008-12-17 07:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Careful, you're making credit card companies lust after having you as a customer. :)

Um...

(Anonymous) 2008-12-19 05:28 am (UTC)(link)
Is it just me, or does the statement that "customers who have purchased or rated 'Wuthering Heights' ... have ALSO [emphasis mine] purchased 'The Penguin Classics Library Complete Collection: More than 1000 of the Greatest Classics' suggest that said collection does not, in fact, include "Wuthering Heights"? And if that is the case, just what the hell is in that collection?

[identity profile] mollyringle.livejournal.com 2008-12-22 04:19 pm (UTC)(link)
It actually does include it. And that's one of the many things I don't get about this collection. If you love the classics, wouldn't you already own a good couple hundred of these, at least? So who's buying this?? I just do not get it.
