How much do you remember about learning how to read?

My mom asked me that recently, and for me the answer is "Nothing, really." I was quite young; two or three, maybe. Now my son appears to be following in my footsteps.

At age two and a half, he's already stopping to point to letters and numbers on signs or cars or anywhere they appear, and reading them aloud. So far it's mostly just the individual characters ("F! O! R! D!"), but in at least two cases he's remembered what the whole word is. (Those two cases, in typical negative two-year-old fashion: "No" and "Stop". Well, they're both on signs on lot.) We iz proud parentz!

In not exactly related news...

Analyzing my webpage hit statistics shows clearly that the old parodies are really what people still come to read, both the Lord of the Rings film ones and the two Harry Potter book ones. This indicates to me that the smart thing to do, self-advertising-wise, is parody the first five HP books too. So, eventually I'll get started on that. Anyone have an extra copy of Sorcerer's Stone they want to send me? I borrowed the first three books when I read them.

Maybe I'll even get the first one done before the next film comes out. Which, at this rate, gives me plenty of time.

One of my earlier recollections is reading "Frog and Toad Together", which I'm told was around age three or four. But I don't recall the process of learning to read at all.

Did anyone else misinterpret the "F! O! R! D!" as Fnord, at first glance?

A new set of parodies is probably a good idea, considering how people are finding you. Especially if they're fun to write. :-)

I have 4 copies of the 1st book, one practically brand new and never read through... Bought it a few years ago when I was determined to have every edition of every book. I have since realized that's a bit silly and pointless so if you'd like it, let me know and I'd be happy to send it along to further the parodies! Love your stuff!

True confessions: I remember a lot about learning to read, b/c I didn't start until I was six... It's probably kind of boring to anyone but me, though.

Considering I had to look up "fnord" to remember what it meant (which, apparently, is anything and nothing), it wasn't likely to occur to me. But "fjord" might make sense around here. :)

There's always the idea of parodying the LOTR books, in turn, too.

E.g., Rivendell:
Gandalf: We must destroy the Ring.
Boromir: No we shouldn't.
(FIFTY PAGES LATER)
Frodo: I'll take it there personally just to get out of this meeting.

Yes! Must hear some eastern toddler talk. Other parents are always telling me to make more sound recordings, as they're so priceless to hear later in life. I haven't made nearly enough--a shameful omission in a linguist.

Is Colin repeating anything he shouldn't yet? Z said "Dammit!" the other week. Oops. Mommy's in big trouble... :)

People start reading later than that sometimes, and still turn into avid readers, so perhaps it doesn't matter much in the long run.

And yes, I suppose I'll use the Ringwraith name again, even if it's posted on this LJ, just for consistency. Or else I'll have to come up with an HP-related pen name.
