If you've not seen it yet, FreeRice is a cool site where you can quiz yourself on vocab, and for every word you get right, the UN donates 10 grains of rice to Hungry People somewhere or other. It also automatically adjusts its difficulty level based on the words you get right, so it should get more challenging as you go.

This may be the first time my lexical abilities have ever directly put food in anyone's mouth--and is likely to be the only time. Fun to play, though.

What fun! 710 grains of rice and I'm only stopping because it's WAY past my bedtime. Nothing to do with the fact that I haven't a CLUE what oscitancy means...

I *knew* that all those childhood years I spent reading the "Improve your vocabulary" articles in Reader's Digest didn't go to waste! ;-)

Love it! I'm stuck at a level 42 after donating over a thousand grains. I shall now challenge the peons to beat me and help the hungry at the same time. Thank you. :)

I'm wavering between level 43 and 47, and racked up about 1600 grains before I quit. Definitely something I'll do regularly.

Fun with words! It's nice to have something like that to sharpen my brain up. Thanks for the tip!

It's very funny! I stayed half an hour playing with FreeRice. 800 grams the result. The less difficult words were for me those with latin root.
Thanks for the link!

Heh--I know; at first I was all, "Pssh, these are easy!" Then they started throwing stuff like names of African beetles at me. Hm.

I thought of those articles too, as well as our vocab books in middle school. :)

I've reached level 48 a few times, but only through educated guesses. Glad you got some good playin'-and-rice-servin' done!

I've managed to touch level 48, but only through guesses. I can't imagine what levels 49 and 50 hold!

It really does seem to revive the lexical areas of the mind, doesn't it? Pretty cool.

Ooh, very good! Must be a great way to practice English if you're not a native speaker. I'm impressed!

By the way, I have a poster of that artwork in your icon. Nice to see it there. :)

I hit 48 for a while, and then plummeted back down to 43-44.

Some of the ones I missed made me think that the answer they gave as the correct one could not POSSIBLY be right, but after checking out some dictionaries and thesauruses, well, I learned that I'm not as well read as I thought. ;-)

I've been enjoying that site! It's a fun and useful way to expand my vocabulary and (attempt to) convince my friends that studying Latin and Greek is not entirely useless. Through much determination and guesswork I have attained level 50 (for the space of about two words, but it's a start). I think I've donated about 20,000 grains in the process...

*nod*
I can guess a lot of them correctly just from etymology, though I hardly know any true Latin or Greek. At least we're doing good in the process!
