It is the beginning of autumn, and I am happy about it. Night temperatures have been getting down into the 40s; wood smoke has started to tint the scent of the air; the first yellow leaves are falling. As a Washingtonian I really should have an apple tree budding with ripe fruit to round things out, but we don't at the moment. Will settle for buying local apples at the grocery store. (Munching on slices of one right now.)

However, I seem to be the only one who is happy about the autumnal equinox, given that 85% of my friends list, and the people I've encountered at work today, are snarling, grumbling, or biting. Guess the balance of daylight and night doesn't lend to a balanced mood.

So, a more amusing thought: as a pregnant woman, what should I be for Halloween this year? Britney Spears? Catholic schoolgirl? Prom queen? Caramel apple? Put your brainstorming capacities to the task.

And lastly but not leastly, a happy birthday to Bilbo and Frodo.

Well, based upon statistics, Catholic Schoolgirl..

Well, I have some really cheesy sparkly high-heels with clear lucite heels...you could borrow them and find a tiara and some tiny little WalMart outfit (denim mini-skirt, tube top and bra-straps should work) and be a Trailer Trash Cinderella. I bought them for the express purpose of creating this costume, but there's the problem that I am not pregnant, and I have never seen a hootchie trailer trash pregnant girl with her baby-belly covered, so I can't just stuff a pillow in there if I want to be authentic. Maybe when I am expecting myself...

Also: word to the autumn weather happy. I love autumn, but I know a lot of people with that seasonal affective disorder or whatever it's called, where they get grumpy when there's no sun. I guess being a Californian, I will take all the romantically damp and dreary weather I can get since it's a novelty rather than the norm.

Perhaps if we actually HAD fall, and perhaps if we didn't have another major hurricane breathing down our necks, we'd be more balanced.

You should be a peanut M&M.

Public schoolgirl is probably much likelier, but Catholic has a more comedic element. "Nun" came to mind as well, but under those robes it actually would not be easy to see the pregnant belly...

Oh, a hurricane is a very good reason to grumble! I don't blame you guys. I was thinking more of all the people who seem to be in dire moods for no particular reason. :) I cringed in sympathy at the mention of those temperatures you're getting. Ick... California was bad enough; I can't imagine combining it with humidity.

Peanut M&M. Heehee! Good one.

Ahahah! That is a great idea. Might be chilly on a late October day/night, but then again I run warm these days. Will definitely keep that in the running.

And yeah...I grieved for autumn when I lived in the Sacramento Valley. It was like a cruel joke, the continuing sunshine and blue skies and total lack of rain, all the way till November. How is the moss supposed to thrive on my north side in such conditions?

I am seconding the Peanut M&M vote, here. That would be awesome.

I <3 fall too, and I think you should be a light bulb. Possibly an upside down one.

Get some fake tan and black marker pens and pretend you're growing a pumpkin.

Costume suggestions:

* male seahorse

* blushing bride, in a white gown (a la Fanny Brice)

* Dom Monaghan (v. v. inside joke--see this).

Let us know what you choose! :D

I know this is a bit late, but welcome back! I just looked at your pictures and it looks like you had a blast.

I cannot imagine why anyone would grumble when Autumn rolls around. It's my favorite time of year. The colors! The weather! The smells! Ahhh...I definitely feel my mood lightening when I look outside and see rain clouds.

As for a costume idea...I really like the Catholic schoolgirl idea. Plus, you could get everything you need at some cheap secondhand store. I've done it plenty of times.

That interview with Elijah is great! Too funny. (I assume he really said "Merry", regarding the child's possible name...not "Mary".) :) Also, he is ever so cute in the glasses. Male seahorse, and bride, are clever costume ideas too. I know I wouldn't fit into my own wedding dress anymore, but there must be one out there...hmm...

And I bet autumn in Alaska is about what we'd call winter here! Still, yes--it's pretty in any area that gets changing seasons.

Hmm, never looked for Catholic schoolgirl wear in secondhand stores, but I suppose it may well be out there...
